故宫的面积相当于多少个白宫？
At the very heart of Beijing, it’s a large rectangle—three quarters of a kilometer wide and nearly a kilometer deep. High walls and a wide moat separated it from the rest of Beijing. The walls enclosed an immense space, 720,000 square meters—that’s the size of 437 White Houses and more than 100 football pitches could fit in its grounds.
座落在北京中心地带的紫禁城，呈一个巨大的矩形——东西约750米，南北纵深约1000米。高高的城墙和宽阔的护城河将它和北京其他地方分开。墙内的空间广阔，足有72万平方米——相当于437个白宫的大小。它可容纳100多个足球场。
我们常说的“社稷”分别代表着什么？
The spatial terms of left and right also reflect an important tradition in China’s imperial
construction—“the ancestral shrines on the left and altar of Land and Grain on the right”. In Chinese, we say 左祖右社.
“左”和“右”这两个空间术语也可以反映出中国皇家建筑中的重要传统——祖先宗祠在左，社稷坛则在右。即中文里的“左祖右社”。
On the left side of Tian’anmen, namely the east side, was constructed the Imperial Ancestral Temple where the emperors came to show respect to their ancestors. While, on the right side, is the Altar of Land and Grain. Here is the place for the emperors to worship the God of the Land and the God of the Grain, praying for a harvest in the next year.
在天安门左侧，即东侧，建有太庙，皇帝来此祭拜先祖。右侧则是社稷坛，皇帝在此祭拜土地神和五谷神，祈祷来年收成大好。
In Chinese culture, the God of Land is known as She and the God of Grain is known as Ji. So, you know what the word Sheji in Chinese means?
