写作是一个复杂的思维过程，是语言综合运用能力的重要体现。英国当代语言学家韩礼德（M. A. K. Halliday，1973）曾说过，语言在用笔写下之前，一直是潜意识中的东西。北京外国语大学刘润清教授也曾指出，只有写作水平才能真正反映一个人的语言修养。由此可见写作在英语学习中的重要性。
近年来，社会发展对学生的英语听说能力有了更高要求，多数高校的教育重点也因此更偏重于听说训练；而相对来说，写作教学所占的比重则较小。加上我国高校普遍采用“大班教学”，课时紧、人数多，学生缺乏足够的写作指导和训练，对写作方法不甚了解，写作能力提高缓慢。但在当今社会，写作能力已经成为受过良好教育的个人职业发展与成功的必备能力（甚至生存能力），能够促进语言技能的全面发展，各高校也开始逐渐加大对写作教学的重视。
在这种大环境之下，进行有效的写作教学成为高校教师所面临的问题之一。如何切实提升学生的写作水平？如何在大班教学中也能让学生练得多、写得好？

美国应用语言学会（AAAL）前任主席、国际二语写作研讨会创办主席、美国亚利桑那州立大学二语写作研究中心主任Paul Kei Matsuda教授如是说。
2017年1月8日，这位多年从事二语写作教学与研究的专家将应邀再次来到U讲堂，探讨二语写作教学的理念与实践模式。2016年7月，Matsuda教授曾受邀在“全国高校外语学科中青年骨干教师高级研修班：英语写作教学与研究研修班”中担任主讲，并于9月在U讲堂进行了“二语写作研究与论文发表”在线直播课。Matsuda教授轻松幽默的授课风格、严谨清晰的研究思路、丰富新颖的教学方法赢得了老师们的一致好评。新年伊始，Matsuda教授将再次为关注写作教学与研究的老师们奉上一场思想盛宴。

本次直播共两讲、四个课时，旨在助力教师全面提升二语写作教学的能力。课程包括“如何进行基于真实语境的写作教学”以及“如何提升大班写作教学的有效性”两部分内容。Matsuda教授将结合具体实例，讲授真实语境对二语写作的重要性，指导教师设计有真实语境的写作任务，帮助学生应对不同的写作情境。针对大学英语教师普遍感觉困难的大班写作教学，Matsuda教授认为，对教师而言，less is more。老师应以学生为主体，开展体裁分析、自我评估、同伴反馈、合作式写作等活动。

Teaching Second Language Writing to a Large Class
Writing is becoming increasingly important in the highly literate and networked society, but it poses a challenge for teachers who work with large numbers of students. Is it possible to teach writing well in a large class? This lecture will provide strategies for writing instruction that can minimize the teacher’s workload while maximizing student’s learning outcomes.

Paul Kei Matsuda
(Arizona State University)
Professor of English and Director of Second Language Writing at Arizona State University. He is also Concurrent Professor of Applied Linguistics at Nanjing University and Zhengzhou University. Paul has published widely on various topics on language, writing and professional development in applied linguistics, rhetoric and composition and TESOL, and has received a number of prestigious awards for his publications. His works include Handbook of Second and Foreign Language Writing, Cross-Language Relations in Composition, Second-Language Writing in the Composition Classroom: A Critical Sourcebook, Second Language Writing Research: Perspectives on the Process of Knowledge Construction etc. Paul is Founding Chair of the Symposium on Second Language Writing and Series Editor of the Parlor Press Series on Second Language Writing. He has also served as the founding chair of the CCCC Committee on Second Language Writing and the chair of the Nonnative English Speakers in TESOL (NNEST) Caucus.
