The 2016 FLTRP Writing Contest has come to a successful end. This year, the Contest attracted thousands of students nationwide, college students, of course, and through university-level and provincial-level contests, 91 contestants, including one from Macao, made their way to the final phase of the Contest here in Beijing. In the final phase of the Contest, the contestants were required to write two essays, one argumentative and the other narrative

On the Prompt and the Contestants

Argumentative Essay: Has Man A Future?

The topic for the argumentative essay was "Has Man A Future?" The contestants were expected to express their ideas concerning man's future, that is, whether to support Chinese philosopher Liang Shuming's optimistic view or Polish graphic designer Igor Morski's pessimistic view.  Some resorted to such rhetorical devices as metaphors, quotations, allusions, emphatic or parallel structures to reinforce their arguments or make their essays appealing. Some stories, told in their own words instead of using clichés, sounded quite personal and even touching. The essays showed to varying degrees the contestants' broad perspectives, wide range of knowledge, power of imagination and creativity.

Narrative Essay:Write A Letter

For the narrative piece, the contestants were supposed to model after Margaret Atwood's "A Letter to America" and write a letter to an event or an object in their life in a similar personified style, telling the story or stories that happened between it and the contestant. The judging panel found most of the contestants managed to meet the requirements. Many contestants were able to come up with original ideas, forceful arguments and convincing supporting details, and logically developed them in their essays.

Make Clear What We Are Writing About

As we all know, of the various language skills, writing is the most difficult and challenging, especially in a competition or when pressed for time. But in any case, it is important to first of all make clear what we are writing about or what the specific requirement is. For instance, in the first essay this time, you were expected to argue for one view and against the other, which is different from simply stating your own opinion. And for the second essay, you were supposed to write a letter to an event or an object in your life in a personified style by telling a personal story or two. Some contestants did lend wings to their imagination and write to events like the public English speaking contest, the college entrance exams or America's 9/11, and to objects like a bridge, a dictionary, a pillow or a walnut tree. You certainly will not hit the mark if you write to a person or continue with what Margaret Atwood has already written.

First Learn Then Reproduce Properly

The judging panel also would like to remind the contestants of Francis Bacon's famous saying, "Writing makes an exact man." While many of you could write your essays long enough and quite fluently, you overlooked the importance of accuracy. If you had allowed but 5-10 minutes at the end of your writing going over what you have written, many of the grammatical and spelling mistakes or other glaring errors may well have been avoided. So our advice is, when you write, make sure what you write is right. It’s true you are already excellent contestants, but just because you are excellent, there is every reason you should strive to do even better. In order to do better, you must keep on learning, keep on practicing, keep on doing solid work. We should all yearn, learn before we earn. Fortunately, FLTRP has provided a unique platform for us not just to perform, but to learn. What is FLTRP? To me it means "First Learn Then Reproduce Properly". So let's all embrace FLTRP, heartily and enthusiastically.
